Emer McDonough

Emer McDonough, flute

Equally at home as soloist or orchestral Principal Flute, Emer McDonough principal flute of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Britten Sinfonia, the Orchestra of St John’s and is the flute player for the Haffner Wind Ensemble. She was previously principal flute of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra.

Based in London, Emer also performs, records and tours as Guest Principal Flute with orchestras such as the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, BBC Concert Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra (Norway), City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, English National Ballet, English National Opera, Halle, Irish Chamber Orchestra, London Mozart Players, London Philharmonic Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, Northern Sinfonia, Opera de Lyon (France), Philharmonia, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra.

Emer’s solo career has included the British premiere of the Christopher Rouse Concerto with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra in Marin Alsop’s debut concert as Principal Conductor, and the Irish premiere of the same work with the National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, with whom she also featured as soloist in the televised “Symphony Sessions”. Emer has also performed as concerto soloist with the Hong Kong Philharmonic, Irish Chamber Orchestra, RTE Concert Orchestra, Belgian Radio Orchestra and, as prize winning finalist of the Shell LSO Competition, the London Symphony Orchestra at the Barbican.

Her solo recitals with pianist Jeremy Young have included venues such as St Martin in the Fields, Bridgewater Hall Manchester, Queens Hall Edinburgh and the National Concert Hall in Dublin and radio broadcasts in Hong Kong. A keen chamber musician, Emer collaborates with many of the finest musicians and earlier this month toured Ireland with the Vanburgh String Quartet.

Also a teacher, Emer is visiting lecturer at the Dublin College of Music. She has also given masterclasses at the Royal Northern College of Music, Royal Academy of Music, Royal College of Music, Royal Irish Academy and the Oxford Flute School and has tutored the flute section of the National Youth Orchestra.

Emer studied flute with Doris Keogh at The Irish Academy and with Peter Lloyd at the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM). She was awarded a postgraduate diploma and a professional performance diploma with distinction from the RNCM.
