James Anderson
James Anderson, tuba
ames Anderson has been one of the country’s leading tuba players for many years. At the age of 20 he left the Royal Northern College of Music to become the tuba player with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. After three years he joined the BBC Symphony Orchestra where he remained for seven years during which time he became the tuba professor at the Guildhall School of Music and joined the London Sinfonietta. As a freelance player he has performed with most of the leading orchestras and ensembles in Britain. – Britten Sinfonia, The London Symphony Orchestra, the Halle Orchestra, LPO, RPO, Royal Opera House, Philip Jones Brass Ensemble, The Wallace Collection, BBC Scottish, CBSO, ECO, and many more. He has also played with many orchestras abroad including the Boston Symphony, Rotterdam Philharmonic, Vienna Academia, Orchestra Anima Eterna (Bruges).
James has given masterclasses, examined and taught at most of the country’s leading colleges of music and is involved with educational projects with the Royal Opera House, Britten Sinfonia and other orchestras.
A few years ago he started playing the pre-cursers of the tuba (cimbasso, ophicleide, and serpent) with period instrument orchestras including the Hanover Band, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and the Monteverdi Orchestra. James has started to present a “History of the Tuba” recital programme based around these instruments. This can be a short entertainment, suitable for after dinner presentation, extending to a longer lecture recital, designed for music colleges, historical societies etc. It is quite a light hearted programme, but very informative.
