Mozart Divertimento in D, K136
Schubert arr. Mahler Death and the Maiden
Vivaldi Four Seasons

Mozart was still travelling extensively with his father as a boy of 16 when he wrote his joyous, song-like Divertimento in D between two extended tours of Italy in 1771 and 1772. Thomas Gould then directs Britten Sinfonia in Mahler's orchestration of Schubert's fiercely intense string quartet Death and the Maiden.  Mahler had a great enthusiasm for arranging legendary compositions for chamber orchestra in order to bring them to a wider public. In this stunning arrangement Mahler creates a passionate and resonant work which retains the vigour and tragedy of the original piece. The concert is completed by the ever-popular Four Seasons by Vivaldi.
