Martinů Sinfonia Concertante
A celebratory concert that features works by composers who all have significant anniversaries during 2009 including Handel, Martinů, Mendelssohn and Haydn. The opening fanfare-like Overture from Purcell heralds Handel’s majestic and exquisite Concerto Grosso in F major. Martinu’s distinct 20th century neo-classical style blends seamlessly with Haydn’s lesser-known and exultant Symphony No. 70 in D major and Mendelssohn’s lyrically poignant overture to The Fair Melusina. The orchestra will be conducted for the first time by Christopher Hogwood, a leading expert in classical repertoire and one of the finest exponents of Martinů’s music.
“Christopher Hogwood’s name is a byword for excellence of playing and quality of supporting scholarship.” BBC Music Magazine
