The celebrated partnership between Joanna MacGregor and Britten Sinfonia has seen a number of ground-breaking projects with Nitin Sawhney, Egberto Gismonti and, most notably, the music of Moondog. Their latest project features the oud virtuoso and vocalist, Dhafer Youssef, whose extraordinary music blends Sufi traditions, world and jazz influences, with Arabic lyricism and mysticism. With a distinctly East European flavour, the programme will include music from Bela Bartok (the thrillingly raw Burletta, in a new arrangement for string orchestra) and transcendent Arvo Part works (including the seminal Fratres), alongside the North African influences of Dhafer Youssef.  Drummer Satoshi Takeishi and bassist Peter Herbert are added to the mix; both highly regarded in their own right and spiritual partners in Dhafer's music.  New works emerging from this inspiring collaboration include a brand new work influenced by Rumanian folk music by Joanna MacGregor.  This unique concert will take place as part of the opening night of the London Jazz Festival.

‘...the kind of gig you watched and prayed would never end, charged with such magic that you knew you would be telling people about it in years to come’ (of Dhafer Youssef) Straight No Chaser
