The scintillating oboe-playing of Nicholas Daniel is the highlight of this concert, with the centrepiece being Vaughan Williams’ pastoral oboe concerto, a piece he made his own when he won the BBC Young Musician of the Year in 1980. Nicholas Daniel also treats us to a typically vivacious Vivaldi concerto and Bach’s beautiful double concerto for oboe and violin, in which he is joined by Britten Sinfonia’s co-leader Thomas Gould. Two early works for strings by towering figures of the 20th century complete the programme: Shostakovich's Prelude and Scherzo for double string quartet was probably composed while he was still a student at the Leningrad Conservatory, while Britten’s tribute to his teacher Frank Bridge was the work which catapulted Britten onto the international music scene.
