James MacMillan conductor

Shostakovich arr. Barshai Chamber Symphony
James MacMillan Oboe Concerto
Beethoven Symphony No.2 in D major

Please note:
Mozart Symphony No. 40 in G minor, K550 replaces Beethoven Symphony No.2 in Chelmsford.

Since winning the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition at the age of 18 Nicholas Daniel has developed a long and distinguished career as one of the foremost exponents of the oboe. In this concert Nicholas performs James MacMillan’s Oboe Concerto written especially for him and Britten Sinfonia. The rest of the concert features Beethoven’s vigorous Symphony No. 2 and Shostakovich’s Chamber Symphony, a powerful reaction to the 1945 bombing of Dresden.

In the following short film Nicholas Daniel talks about commissioning music and James MacMillan's new oboe concerto
