Since winning the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition at the age of 18 Nicholas Daniel has developed a long and distinguished career as one of the foremost exponents of the oboe. In this concert Nicholas performs James MacMillan’s Oboe Concerto written especially for him and Britten Sinfonia which they premièred in 2010 to critical aclaim. Described by The Times as "wonderfully virtuosic and superbly crafted" the concerto has a lyrical character that sums up the oboe - pastoral, ruminative and satirical.

Both concerts will be conducted by the composer himself. James MacMillan has formed a close association with Britten Sinfonia who have premièred many of his works including his new opera Clemency in May 2011.
