Saffron Walden Choral Society, Granta Chorale and Saffron Walden youth choir, SignuptoSing join Britten Sinfonia for a gala concert in St Mary's Church to celebrate the rich history of Saffron Walden, using its historic turf maze as a linking theme.

The concert will première a specially commissioned cantata by Janet Wheeler with libretto written by Nick Warburton. The programme will also feature music by Sting, Bob Chilcott, Holst and Vaughan Williams plus church bells and dancers!

In Autumn 2011, composer Elspeth Brooke and members of Britten Sinfonia are running composition workshops with A-level students at Saffron Walden County High School; selected works will feature in the concert.

This project has been chosen by the BBC and LOCOG (The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games) to feature in Music Nation - a spectacular weekend of music around the UK to set the scene and create excitement in the countdown to the London 2012 Festival, the finale of the Cultural Olympiad.
