James MacMillan Parthenogenesis

Turn on the radio, open the newspapers and so often the debate is raging about designer babies, cloned animals, genetic engineering and ultimately the future of human identity. Acclaimed Scottish composer James MacMillan meets these profound issues head on with his extraordinary piece Parthenogenesis, the story of a female human clone born in Hanover during World War II. Conducted by the composer and directed by Katie Mitchell, this dark tale of seduction calls into question our genetic future and cannot fail to raise questions on ethics and human identity.

Parthenogenesis is a collaboration between composer James MacMillan, the poet Michael Symmons Roberts, and Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams. It is an intriguing music-theatre piece comparing a truly extraordinary event in Hanover in 1944 with the Annunciation and the Incarnation.

A ROH2/Britten Sinfonia co-production.

There is a related Insight Evening taking place on 12 June 2009 as well as free post-performance discussions on Monday 15 & Wednesday 17 June in which a panel of experts explore the themes of Parthenogenesis. More details at the link below.
