Britten Variations on a Theme of Frank Bridge

The scintillating oboe-playing of Nicholas Daniel is the highlight of this concert, with the centrepiece being Vaughan Williams' pastoral Oboe Concerto. A British theme informs this programme with Britten's arrangement of a Purcell chaconne opening the concert followed by Tippett's Sellinger's Round which contains several quotations from Purcell's music. The music of Britten then returns with his Six Metamorphoses  for solo oboe and the concert closes with Britten's portrayal of his revered teacher, Frank Bridge.
