Britten quoted Dowland's well-known lute song in his Lachrymae, which spotlights the viola. Former Radio 3 New Generation Artist Lawrence Power also appears in Israeli composer Betty Olivero's war-torn work that draws on Monteverdi's L'Orfeo, as well as the laments of mourning women. Brett Dean responds both to Carlo Gesualdo's music and to his violent temper.
