These New Puritans are a band in the great tradition of British art rock, making the kind of ambitious, distinctive music that puts many of their contemporaries to shame. This concert is a special performance of their recent, breathtaking album Hidden (2010) which sees the band working with Britten Sinfonia to realize the record’s cinematic textures and ambitious arrangements.

These New Puritans consists of Jack Barnett (songwriter, producer, vocalist, multi-instrumentalist), his twin brother George Barnett (drums, loops), Thomas Hein (bass guitar, sampler, drums), and Sophie Sleigh-Johnson (keyboards, sampler). Jack Barnett has said that their influences range from Wu Tang Clan to Aphex Twin; he also has a deep interest in love for the Early music of William Byrd and John Taverner.

'Genuinely surprising, beautifully wrought, and it announces TNP as one of the most powerful artistic forces in Britain today.’ NME on Hidden

‘…booming Taiko drums, brass, woodwind, synths and a creepy kids’ choir… (this is) an adventurous, challenging and futuristic recording.’
Mojo **** on Hidden

Opening the concert are Darkstar, the production duo of James Young and Aiden Whalley; they’ve carefully released records on their own 2010 Records imprint and on Kode 9's Hyperdub Label. Darkstar stand out from their peers thanks to their unique android machine-soul sound and their focus on songwriting that still works on dancefloors.
