Britten Sinfonia principal oboist Nicholas Daniel has today been named as the recipient of the Queen’s Medal for Music 2011, awarded to an outstanding musician who has had a major influence on the musical life of the nation. Previous award winners are Bryn Terfel, Sir Colin Davis and Dame Emma Kirkby.
Sir Peter Maxwell Davies, Master of the Queen’s Music, will announce Nicholas Daniel’s award informally at a concert at King’s College on Sunday 29 January. Her Majesty The Queen will present Nicholas with the award at an audience later in the year.
The music at the concert on 29 January, selected by Nicholas, comprises two iconic wind pieces that mean a great deal to him and he is delighted to be performing them at this special concert. Britten’s Metamorphoses after Ovid are six perfect character miniatures for solo oboe. Mozart’s Serenade for 13 winds Gran Partita is monumental work - Nicholas describes it as “scaling Everest ... it contains some of the most beautiful music Mozart ever wrote”. In Peter Shaeffer’s Amadeus, the music moves the sceptical Salieri to admit “I thought I heard the voice of god”. The Haffner Wind Ensemble is comprised of many leading wind players, close colleagues of Nicholas, who will join in celebrating this well deserved award. Congratulations Nicholas!
