Britten Sinfonia Wins RPS Award
Britten Sinfonia has won the prestigious Ensemble Award at last night's Royal Philharmonic Society [RPS] Music Award ceremony, the Oscars of live classical music in the United Kingdom.
The award was presented to Britten Sinfonia Leader Jacqueline Shave and David Butcher, the orchestra's Chief Executive by Dame Janet Baker at a glittering ceremony at London's Dorchester Hotel last night (Tuesday 14 May)
The award was for the orchestra¹s work in 2012, a year in which Britten Sinfonia celebrated its twentieth birthday, launched its own professional choir, Britten Sinfonia Voices, became an Associate Ensemble at London's Barbican Centre and set up Britten Sinfonia Academy to support outstanding young musicians from across the East of England. The RPS Music Awards jury, calling the orchestra "an ensemble fit for the 21st Century", praised the ensembles "innovation and excellence" and its "up for anything" players.
David Butcher, who earlier this year was named ABO Orchestra Manager of the Year, comments: "2012 brought new Britten Sinfonia ensembles, strong partnerships, birthday celebrations and most importantly, fantastic music. The outstanding Britten Sinfonia players and their infectious passion for music are at the root of the orchestra¹s success. Their talent, enquiring musical minds and determination for excellence are celebrated with this award. We¹re delighted to receive it, and as fitting for an orchestra that is 20 years young, we¹re looking forward to the many musical adventures ahead."
The RPS Music Awards are presented in association with BBC Radio 3, which will broadcast a special RPS Music Awards programme at 2pm on Sunday 19 May.
