Beat Orchestra

The Beat Orchestra, a new creative music group is setting out to challenge young people in Peterborough as hip-hop takes on classical, beatboxing meets bhangra , drum’n’ bass versus jazz and pop goes head to head with indie…

The Beat Orchestra is to be established in Peterborough with generous support from the Arts Council, with funds from the National Lottery England, Orchestras Live and Vivacity.

Led by Peterborough-based Beat This CIC, and in partnership with Vivacity, Orchestras Live and internationally renowned chamber orchestra Britten Sinfonia, the project will be a new ensemble for 14-19 year olds from across the City. The group will create and compose its own music in its own style, inspired by the musical passions of the young artists; whether that be classical, rock, pop, folk, or urban genres.

The project is not only an amazing opportunity to develop young talent; the Beat Orchestra is also recruiting local musicians and music leaders to work on the project.

The Beat Orchestra will start recruiting in local schools and community groups in October, and will invite future mcs, budding guitarists and young instrumentalists to attend a large workshop session in the October half-term holiday. Following this the group will meet regularly on Saturday mornings at the Key Theatre, making use of the venue’s fantastic facilities. The Beat Orchestra will showcase their new music at a series of concerts in the city over the coming year, including a large-scale concert as part of Peterborough Arts Festival in 2013.

Local musicians and five local music leaders are being sought by the Beat Orchestra to work on the project over the coming year. Training and support will be provided by internationally renowned music leaders, Beat This practitioners and musicians from Britten Sinfonia.

“We would like to encourage musicians from all musical backgrounds to apply.” says Lee Ashton, Director of Beat This. “We want the music of the Beat Orchestra to reflect all of Peterborough and therefore we are recruiting staff from all communities. We are looking for staff with teaching or workshop experience, as well as those who are gigging or community musicians. Basically if you’re passionate about music and working with young people, then we would love to hear from you.”
If you are interested in applying for the role of music leader or musician please contact Lee Ashton at Beat This on 01733 873014 or leeashton@beatthis.org

Sarah Haythornthwaite, Arts Service Manage for Vivacity says ‘This grant from the Arts Council shows how partnership working in Peterborough can really bring investment into the city and create fantastic opportunities for young people and artists. Many young people learn their musical skills alone and don't get the opportunity to play and compose with others. The Beat Orchestra will be an amazing chance for young people and musicians to come together and share their skills and learn about different types of music. Vivacity and Key Theatre are delighted to be a partner in such a great project!’

If you are a young musician aged 14-19 and are interested in being part of the Beat Orchestra, please ring Joan Crump at Vivacity on 01733 864531 or Joan.Crump@vivacity-peterborough.com
