Britten Sinfonia

Lunchtime concert on BBC Radio 3 this week

Britten Sinfonia’s Award winning At Lunch series have been very popular once again through out the 2010-11 season. You now have the chance to hear them all again by listening to BBC Radio 3 this week.

The four At Lunch concerts are broadcast at 1pm Tue 31 May, Wed 1 Jun, Thu 2 Jun and Fri 3 Jun. With new works by Peter Maxwell Davies, Julian Phillips, Simon Holt and Enrico Chapela. The concerts were all recorded in Cambridge’s West Road Concert Hall.

The first broadcast today is from a concert performed in October 2010 of a series of works by James MacMillan dedicated to two important people in his life including compoers Peter Maxwell Davies, who presents his reciprical offering in Nocturne No. 1. The programme is completed by Shostakovich’s Piano Quintet in G minor.

Julian Philips’ new work Ricochets between features in the second concert, recorded in December 2010 and broadcast on Wednesday 1 June. Brahms Clarinet Trio and Janácek’s Concertino make up the hour long programme created by Julian Philips.

Schubert’s Trout Quintet is the centre piece of the third lunch concert (recorded in March) and is to be broadcast Thursday 2 June. It is a five-movement piece for piano quintet, with the unusual instrumentation for piano, violin, viola, cello and double bass (with the omission of a second violin and the addition of a double bass breaking the traditional piano quintet mould). This is complimented by Simon Holt’s new work everything turns away.

The final concert of the series takes its inspiration from South America. Piazzolla’s Four Seasons of Buenos Aires is at the heart of this concert with works by Marcelo Nisinman,Tarantino and Enrico Chapela forming a complimentary programme around. The concert was recorded in April 2011 and will be broadcast on Friday 3 June.

We hope you can enjoy hearing these concerts again or for the first time this week.
