Mark Padmore tour
February sees Britten Sinfonia embarking on a UK tour of English Song with tenor Mark Padmore. The six date tour sees Mark perform John Woolrich arrangements of three Purcell songs; If Music be the Food of Love, Music for a While and Sweeter than Roses alongside Finzi’s Dies natalis in Cambridge, London and Norwich and Britten’s Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings in Dartington, Southampton and Birmingham.
In an article in The Guardian today (Fri 28 Jan) Mark Padmore reflects on how we have come to expect instant gratification in all areas of our lives and how rewarding it can be to take time to get to know a work of art, music or poem or picture. Gerald Finzi was a composer who took his time; his works often took years to reach their final form. His love and understanding of poetry inspired many vocal works including Dies natalis.
“What I’m hoping for with this tour is that we’ll draw the audience into the imaginative world of these songs, which is so rich.” Mark Padmore
Also featured in the programme are works for string orchestra by Tippett, Purcell, John Woolrich and Walton.
