Song of the Earth

Reflecting on the powerful words of the late Kiribati poetess and activist Teresia Teaiwa, Lemi Ponifasio's Sea Beneath the Skin creates a poignant performance featuring the Theatre of Kiribati.

The homeland of the Kiribati people is facing the overwhelming and devastating effects of climate change, making their participation in this work both deeply meaningful and urgent. The piece contemplates the life of our collective body, exploring our profound connection with the world beyond humanity.

It brings together Pacific traditional rituals and Gustav Mahler’s Song of the Earth, fusing these elements in a powerful and emotional outcry. The performance becomes a powerful statement on the shared human experience, highlighting the intersection of environmental destruction, cultural heritage, and the call for collective action in the face of global climate crises.
