Star cellist returns as the soloist in John Tavener's The Protecting Veil
Britten Sinfonia and Guy Johnston reprise their acclaimed performances of John Tavener’s intensely beautiful The Protecting Veil, this time taking the piece to St Sophia’s Greek Orthodox Cathedral, London, where John Tavener used to worship.
“One of the later 20th century’s most beloved and moving works” (Gramophone magazine), this timeless classic is full of intimacy and emotion.
One of the very few cellists to have worked with Sir John Tavener, Guy Johnston is the soloist and central character, transcendent amidst Britten Sinfonia’s heady layers of sound.
“Johnston’s playing, alongside colleague cellists providing much exotic bitonality, was beyond beautiful, of sublime transcendence. By the end there was no doubt that Johnston and Britten Sinfonia had pulled off a remarkable feat, Tavener’s wish to create a lyrical ikon in sound had been realised.”
