Gerald Barry - Musically Gifted - Britten Sinfonia - Support our work

Gerald Barry

The acclaimed Irish composer Gerald Barry is a unique compositional talent, with a great body of work that is whimsical, humorous, edgy and uncompromising. Barry has been a long-time collaborator with Britten Sinfonia and lists Beethoven as one of his great influences; therefore it is apt that throughout our three year Beethoven Symphony Cycle we have paired each of Beethoven’s Symphonies with works by Gerald Barry. In this vein, Gerald Barry is writing a new viola concerto for the violist Lawrence Power and Britten Sinfonia to be performed alongside Beethoven’s Symphonies 7 and 8.

Prior to the Beethoven Cycle, Britten Sinfonia last worked with Gerald Barry when they gave the European premiere of his uproariously funny opera Alice’s Adventures Under Ground with soprano Barbara Hannigan in the lead role. The opera was widely praised by critics and audiences, with the Daily Telegraph describing it as “Utterly Bonkers.”

Gerald Barry’s viola concerto will be performed on the 18th May 2019 at Saffron Hall and on 21st May 2019 at the Barbican Hall, expect the joyously unexpected!
