Inspired by a Viennese pub visited by many composers for the folk performances it hosted, Britten Sinfonia and ZRI perform classical music re-imagined for orchestra and folk band.
After the toils of daytime, Schubert and Brahms would often visit Vienna’s Red Hedgehog Tavern, Zum Roten Igel (ZRI), to hear breathtakingly emotional and virtuosic folk music.
Enjoy an evening of “re-folked” music by composers who adored the traditional songs and instrumental music of central and eastern Europe, with arrangements of chamber works by Haydn, Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms and Webern for orchestra and a quintet of clarinet, cello, violin, accordion and hammer dulcimer.
The Norwich performance is dedicated to the memory of Richard Somerford.
This concert is likely to last 95 minutes including an interval.
