FOR COMPOSERS

Britten Sinfonia is renowned for its track record of supporting and commissioning composers.
We run two composer development programmes which give UK-based composers and aspiring composers the opportunity to take the next step on their career path. The selected composers for both schemes work closely with our programme directors, Britten Sinfonia musicians, and the wider Britten Sinfonia team to create new works for chamber ensemble for recording and performance, and develop their skills as composers and creatives in a holistic way.
Opus 1
Our Opus 1 composers take part in workshops and a recording day, receiving advice and feedback from our musicians and mentors. The programme is open to people of all ages who are based in the UK and interested in composing music for our players. It is designed to be a “first step on the ladder” for people who have not taken part in similar schemes before.
We give eight chosen composers the opportunity to take part in two workshops to develop their piece with the support and advice from our players and composer mentors Dani Howard and Raymond Yiu.
After the workshops composers take part in a final recording day and an informal sharing session.
“A a result of this project, my confidence has massively grown, and it’s allowed me to think about music in new ways.”
Magnum Opus
Our Magnum Opus scheme is an opportunity for more experienced composers to develop their skills in orchestral writing and to have their works performed as part of two Britten Sinfonia concert programmes.
With support from our musicians and mentors, our Magnum Opus composers work towards the performance of their own concerto in a showcase concert.
Applications for Magnum Opus 2024 will open in the Autumn.
“It’s been insightful, challenging and rewarding all in one”
