SHOULD I APPLY FOR OPUS 1 OR MAGNUM OPUS?
Opus 1 and Magnum Opus are our two composer development programmes which give UK-based composers the opportunity to take the next step on their career path. Find out which scheme suits you better below:
Apply for Opus 1 if:
- You have not taken part in a professional composition scheme or summer course before.
- You are starting to think about what makes your musical voice and style unique.
- There may be some instruments or ensemble groupings that you are less confident in writing for.
- You may have been commissioned by ensemble/orchestra/soloist before.
- You may have professional recordings of one or more of your works.
- You have an existing portfolio of compositions, but you feel that your compositional style develops significantly between each new work.
Apply for Magnum Opus if:
- You have a robust existing catalogue of compositions and are comfortable writing for a full range of chamber ensembles and orchestra.
- You have developed a clear compositional style and are looking to refine this with the aid of our musicians and Programme Directors.
- You may have been commissioned by one or more professional ensembles before.
- You may have professional recordings of one or more of your works.
- You may have had your works premiered in a professional setting before.
- You believe this scheme will launch you further into your professional career.
The statements above are intended as guidelines and should not discourage you from applying to either scheme if you believe it is the right fit for you. Magnum Opus is a highly competitive scheme, typically attracting around 120 applicants for 3 places. Opus 1 attracts around 80 applicants for 6 places. If your application to either scheme is unsuccessful this year, we encourage you to apply again in the future. numbers made up.
