OPUS 1 APPLICATIONS NOW OPEN
Opus 1, one of Britten Sinfonia’s two composer development schemes, is now open for applications. To apply, please submit your application form (linked below) by 17th May at 5pm.
What is Opus 1?
Opus 1 is our composer development designed for UK-based composers over the age of 18, of any background and level of composing ability, who would like to write for Britten Sinfonia ensembles and have not taken part in a similar scheme before.
Opus 1 is designed as a first step on the ladder, while our Magnum Opus programme is aimed at more established early career composers. See below for further info on who should apply.
What does the programme involve?
Each year we select eight Opus 1 composers who receive the opportunity to write for a group of Britten Sinfonia musicians and to take part in workshops, a public concert at All Saints Church, Cambridge, and a recording session.
Throughout the summer, composers will be mentored by Programme Directors, Raymond Yiu and Cheryl Frances-Hoad, and will become part of Britten Sinfonia’s community of composers, with opportunities to get to know the players, the team, and to attend other concerts and events.
This year Opus 1 composers will have the chance to write for a trio of either:
Oboe, cello, and percussion OR
Piccolo, trombone, and harp
The instrument combinations are designed to challenge you as a composer, to give you experience writing for different instrument families, and to be creative.
Who is eligible to apply for Opus 1?
To apply for Opus 1, you must:
Be aged 18 or over.
Be resident in the UK.
Not have taken part in a similar scheme before.
Be available, if selected, to attend the programme, in-person, on the dates below.
