A flautist plays in a school assembly

Each year we visit thousands of primary school children with our interactive school shows, combining music, storytelling, and singing, with the chance to join in. For many children, this is their first time hearing live classical music and seeing orchestral musicians perform.

Last year, we worked with the presenter Rosie Bergonzi and Peterborough Music Hub to bring to life “Billy and the Beast”, a performance based on the book by Nadia Shireen. We visited 13 primary schools in Peterborough, as well as taking the show to the Norfolk and Norwich Festival for family concerts and workshops in schools there.

This Spring, we are working with Music in the Round and presenter Polly Ives on Izzy Gizmo, a piece of new music by Paul Rissmann, based on the book by Pip Jones about Izzy, a young black girl who is an inventor and uses her engineering skills to help an injured bird fly. The music is designed to be engaging and accessible for children, with the chance for them to join in, learn, and sing.

Previous shows have included Professor Astrocat (2019) with Letty Stott, and Max the Brave (2017) with live illustration by Ed Vere.
